World Premiere of Dark Star Requiem - June 11 - 12

Tapestry new opera works celebrate their second partnership with Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, to present the world premiere of Dark Star Requiem, a dramatic oratorio from poet Jill Battson and composer Andrew Staniland, during the opening weekend of the 2010 Festival. - Which is this weekend!

Dark Star Requiem explores the 25-year history of the AIDS pandemic with astonishing power and hope. Shining a light on those affected by the fear, confusion and devastation that AIDS has wrought, this world premiere features four outstanding soloists and two percussionists alongside two of Canada’s premiere ensembles: the Elmer Iseler Singers and the Gryphon Trio. The four soloists have impressive talent and represent our national, cultural diversity: Neema Bickersteth (soprano), Krisztina Szabó (mezzo soprano), Peter McGillivray (baritone) and Marcus Nance (bass-baritone).

Tapestry Managing Artistic Director Wayne Strongman says: "We are so proud to be producing this important and beautiful new work, with such a brilliant array of artists. The creative team, the performers, and the producers have that rare synergy that comes when a work of such integrity is on the line. For a company like Tapestry, which places collaboration at the top of its mandate, the ongoing partnership with Luminato has also deepened our relationship in our own community as well as abroad. It is a wonderful meeting of creative spirits!"

The world premiere of Dark Star Requiem is commissioned by Luminato, with additional support from the Ontario Arts Council, and co-produced by Tapestry new opera works and Luminato.

premieres June 11 and 12, 2010 at 8pm during the opening weekend of Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity.

Presented in Toronto’s breathtakingly beautiful new Koerner Hall at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Dark Star Requiem will be shown on Friday and Saturday night and is sure to garner public and artistic accolades for its power, poetry and poignancy.

Cyndi Lauper Headlines Pride Toronto's 30th Anniversary Festival

Cyndi Lauper, one of the world's most recognized Queer icons, comes to Toronto on Saturday, July 3 2010 for a FREE concert in Queen's Park.

An unwavering advocate for LGBTTIQQ2SA* rights, Cyndi Lauper established herself as a household name with the 1983 single "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", kicking off a long career which includes more than 25 million in record sales and nominations for 13 Grammy awards, 2 Emmy awards, 2 American Music Awards, 7 American Video Awards and 18 MTV awards.

"It's an honor to always have the genuine affection of the gay community," Cyndi says. "They have never turned their back on me and I will never turn my back on them. We've had a long and enduring love affair."

The Grammy award-winning singer and Emmy award-winning actress is currently working on her newest studio album scheduled for release in June. Lauper is also featured on the new "Celebrity Apprentice" edition on NBC starting March 14 and later this year launches her own reality show.

Lauper's performance during Pride Week will be part of a full program of entertainment and activities in Queen's Park; the newest addition to the ever-expanding Pride Week site which includes eight stages over more than 22 city blocks and an attendance of more than one million. Growing and Expanding Gay Communities in Toronto and The Gay Village

The recession has struck gay neighborhoods in cites around the world. San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Miami and even Toronto. And at the root of the evil for most of these cities is greed and high rent. Greed and high rent and a sky-high housing market has helped put us to where we are all at today.

It has forced many business owners to look elsewhere to set up shop. Also though, times have changed. 30 years ago, that's all we had, was our one gay neighborhood. One gay street. As times change and acceptance grows, gays are moving out and blending in to other neighborhoods. Plus, now we have the Internet. The internet has flattend the world, removing barriers and walls, allowing us to connect with others, shop at home and much more.

At a time when queers are increasingly looking beyond the borders of the gaybourhood, the Church Wellesley Village Business Improvement Association is spending money to more clearly define those borders in the original gay village of Toronto. Like other big cities, even though the gay neighborhoods have expanded beyond the original borders, it's important to mark and celebrate the original gay neighborhoods.

Next summer 2011, two 22-foot illuminated structures will be installed on Church to mark the north and south ends of the village. Chicago did something similar on their North Halsted Street to celebrate the borders of Boystown .

Church Street and the area around it has been familiar to the Toronto gay community for many decades. Prior to the 1970s there had been an underground gay scene centered around various bathhouses and bars around the city that were not exclusively gay establishments and were mostly catered to the male population.

The Church Wellesley Village is one of Canada’s most vibrant communities. An international destination known around the world for its electrifying street events, shops, bars and services but mostly for the many different types of people that attend it streets.

Buddies' announces a stellar line-up for the 2009 Rhubarb Festival of new works. AGO Art Gallery of Ontario Re-Opens November 14th

With a permanent collection of more than 68,000 works of art spanning more than 1000 years, the Art Gallery of Ontario is among the most distinguished art museums in North America.

In 2002, the Gallery began an extraordinary chapter in its 108-year history when it launched the Transformation AGO expansion project, scheduled to re-open to the public on November 14, 2008. Multi-faceted in scope, Transformation AGO involves the unprecedented growth of the permanent collection, an innovative architectural expansion by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, and the strengthening of the museum’s endowment resources.

National Coming Out Day October 11th

National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. It is observed on October 11 by members of the LGBT communities and their supporters.

The day was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary in 1988, in celebration of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights one year earlier, in which 500,000 people marched on Washington, DC, for gay and lesbian equality.

National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

Despite its name, National Coming Out Day (so called because it originated as an event in the United States) is in fact observed in many countries, including Switzerland, Germany Canada and the United Kingdom. As of 2008 The Netherlands also has Coming Out Day on 10-11.

Folsom Fair North Toronto WILL NOT Take Place This July

It's sad when a great gay party vanishes...

such is the case with FOLSOM FAIR NORTH TORONTO.

The Toronto version of San Francisco's Folsom Street Fair was dubbed Folsom North, FFN , and ran for 6 years every July, but earlier this year, it was announced they would not produce an event for 2008.

"After a lot of thought and serious discussion we have decided not to produce a 6th version of FFN this July.

This was a hard decision, as we all love creating the party in Allan Gardens!

The time we have to devote to producing an event of this scale is limited this year.

Rather than scale back the event we have chosen to take this year off.

We thank you all for your support and ask that you join our mailing list.

We will keep you up to date with all the current news about FFN!"
